We grow a variety of poppies in our garden along the border with the neighbouring field. I say ‘grow’ but they really seed themselves and pop up wherever the wind or birds distribute the seeds. I generally leave them be and let them thrive unless they invade the vegetable garden. I collect the heads and dry them for decoration, harvesting the seeds to distribute in the spring. Their brown papery texture and forms are such lovely objects.
Lots of people are wearing red paper poppies at the moment in support of The Royal British Legion as Remembrance Day approaches and we think of all those who have lost their lives during war – military and civilians alike.
