I have put together a two hour radio show with the help of my other half - vinyl collector, Wild Thyme record producer and all round ‘Prog’ (Progressive Rock) ‘aficionado’ @harolddemure - a personal selection of ‘Songs of the Sea’ - a collection of my favourite ‘watery’ tracks from across the years - inspired by a beautiful verse written in elegant script on an oyster shell by my talented Cornish friend Julia @awordinyourshell. An interesting little ‘side-trip’ to Godmersham Ch An interesting little ‘side-trip’ to Godmersham Church - St Lawrence the Martyr. We’ve driven past it countless times but stopped off today and had a look around. It’s one of many churches on the pilgrimage route between Winchester and Canterbury and close to Godmersham Park - one time home to Jane Austen’s elder brother Edward Austen Knight and one of several historic houses in the area to claim her as a regular visitor. The ancient church is home to an interesting late 12th century bas-relief carving believed to represent Thomas Becket - murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. The estate is privately owned but the Godmersham Heritage Centre is open twice weekly and the Park’s gardens can be visited selectively under the National Garden Scheme. #godmersham #aonb #janeaustenwozere
A delightful piece of street art by @catman_artist A delightful piece of street art by @catman_artist which I discovered by chance today in Northgate, Canterbury. Apparently a tribute to ‘gallivanting Griffin’ - a friendly young rescue cat who travelled widely across the city and beyond and liked to hang out with staff and students on the University campus. Sadly Griffin was killed in a traffic accident but was obviously much loved and missed by those whose lives he touched on a daily basis. 😿. #streetart #inmemorium #gallivatinggriffin

A interesting little exhibition @assembly_house Norwich titled: Mary Newcomb: A Life Recorded. Mary Newcomb (1922-2008) was a self-taught artist who settled in rural East Anglia. Her life and art were rooted in everyday observation and the natural world, her unique visual language and poetic vision closely aligned with her writing. I recently added this intriguing piece to my small collection of Christopher’s work - mainly mysterious and slightly unsettling paintings of solitary vernacular buildings in moonlit landscapes (although I also have a few of his wonderful animal portraits). This particular work is part of a new series of chalk drawings (this one on painted wood) - poetic spectral images of ruined buildings and ghost ships. It appeals because I am always drawn to thin places - where past, present and perhaps future coexist or collide - what TS Eliot refers to in his poetry as the ‘still point’. We actually considered buying a house in a graveyard, once upon a time. I have always been drawn to the uncanny but that may have been a step too far 👻.
