‘Curation’ – ‘Pipe Dream’

The piece shown above is composed from the head of a figurine, an old clay pipe and a piece of seaweed.  Each ‘assemblage’ or ‘curation’ is photographed before being dismantled into its component parts for re-use or re-incorporation into different forms. This strikes me as the most appropriate and sustainable way of working with these unique ‘treasures’.  Many are retrieved from the brackish estuary or beaches of North Kent, swept in on the tide and reclaimed later that same day.  My ‘curations’ are equally as random and impermanent – subject to change and serendipity, just like the foreshore on which they were found.  I also enjoy the sense of transience, unpredictability and happenstance that accompanies this way of working.
